The Mighty Eighth CoverThe Mighty Eighth

by Lt. Col. John Wayne Goodson, USAF (Ret.)

During December 1972, I was assigned to SAC's Eighth Air Force and its 43d Strategic (Bomb) Wing at Andersen AFB Guam.  We had subordinate units in the Western Pacific and Southeast Asia.  In Linebacker II, the job was simple.  Use B-52s along with other Air Force and U.S. Navy aircraft to bomb North Vietnam into submission and meaningful peace negotiations at Paris.  President Nixon personally directed the effort.

Several books have recounted the air war.  The international media saturated radio, television and print media.  My boss on Guam, now USAF Retired Lieutenant Colonel John Wayne Goodson, worked directly for and with the late Lieutenant General Gerald W. Johnson, 8th AF commander for Linebacker II.  As 8th Air Force Director of Information, Lt. Col. Goodson was privy to everything in 8th Air Force.

Now Lt. Col. Goodson breaks his 38 year silence to tell the never before heard story behind the air war.  The real story of the Air Force in the final days of the Vietnam War.  This is a book everyone who was there, or who knew someone who was there, should have.  Read, learn and enjoy the historical 'Mighty Eighth'.
